I made a fused glass tray with a rosemaling design as a focal point.
Inspiration
I have a friend who does beautiful rosemaling work. From talking with her I loved all the meaning behind the design elements. I thought it fit the theme because it is a type of danish folk art.
Instructions
First I cut the glass elements for each tray. These were assembled in my glass kiln then fused to 1450. It took about 24 hours from when I closed the lid to when I removed the trays.
Next, I painted the designs on each tray. This was the hard part. Glass is not an easy surface, and the enamel medium is like oil paint. Then the painted pieces were fired to 1350 to set the paint. The final step was slumping the flat tray into the tray shape. Each tray required about 3 days in the kiln.
Lessons Learned and Highlights
I knew I had no painting skills! But these were fun to try to coax the paint into a rosemaling-ish design and set the enamel before it ran all over the glass. I used my oven between color applications to help with this.
I will be making some larger cheese boards with rosemaling.
